Magnetic Magic?

QUestion:  What happens when magnets attract and repel? (Why do opposite poles attract?)

Investigation:  Place magnets on desk and ask students in groups of 3 to probe this question

Video: A look at Magnets!

Elaboration: Practice using magnets on household or classroom objects and

1.     Record which ones attract to magnets and which ones dont.

2.     Make a chart in your notebook trying to categorize (or place into categories) of what items are attracted and which ones are not.

3.     Come up with a conclusion with your partners about what a material should be made of in order to be magnetic

Review:   Find the theme of the objects, which can and cannot be attracted and ask friends to see if they can predict which ones will attract or repel. Test their predictions by actually showing them in person.

Video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kCq1u_x07S8

Elaboration: using the copper tube try other materials to see if similar reaction occurs

How can one object create a magnetic force with another object even if its not magnetic?

Review:   Bring  2 paper clips to me and lets learn by doing!

Summary Quiz:  Using what you recently learned with magnets please explain how this could or couldnt happen? Is it all magic or science? Make sure to explain your belief using evidence (record answer in notebook, email, PP, screencast, podcast etc).
